Whether it is an intense pain in the neck or the lower back portion, your posture plays a crucial role in causing these localized aches and excruciating pain. Your body is made from bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles meant to perform or move in a particular manner. But the skeletal system takes a significant hit when you force your body to accustom itself to a particular posture that is not ideal. As a result, you get pain in the joints, bones, ligaments, and muscles.
There are many reasons why your posture can be different and not the right way it should be. One of them is screen time. Although the relationship between screen time and your posture sounds weird and irrelevant at the beginning, you will soon realize they are entangled at so many levels. In this blog, we have explained how screen time can affect your posture.
Sitting or standing in the same position for a longer period
The first thing you need to know is that your body is not meant to be in a static position for a long time. Not only will it impact your spine and the pelvic bone, but your lower limbs and joints will also get affected.
For instance, when you are working or watching something by sitting or standing for a long time, the following are the impacts on your posture:
1. When you're sitting or standing in the same position, excessive pressure is applied due to your upper torso, especially on your lower back, pelvic bone, knees, ankle, and feet. You will see your feet and lower leg swelling up after sitting or standing for hours in the same position without making any movement in your posture. Also, your back will become stiff, and the muscles on either side of the backbone will be sore due to increased pressure in the localized pressure points.
2. Similarly, you can also feel soreness and tenderness on your shoulders and the ball and socket joint between your arm and the collarbone. This happens due to the head and neck pressure on the cervical vertebrae and that connected joint.
Working on a laptop or PC with leaned shoulders
Often you will find yourself working on the laptop or PC with lean shoulders. It can happen due to a difference in your high level and the laptop's position or the improper height of the chair in which you are sitting. If this happens, the curvature of the cervical spine is impacted. Usually, 2nd to 6th cervical vertebrae get compressed when you continue to work with lean shoulders for a long time. As a result, the nerves get compressed, and you can develop spondylolysis or a frozen shoulder.
Not following the ergonomics while working
When you do not follow the ergonomic structure while walking, multiple areas of your body are affected due to improper posture. Whether you lean and continue to work or put excessive pressure on the entire backbone due to the hunched structure, the vertebral column and the nerves get affected. Spondylolysis in the cervical or lumbar area of the vertebral column, degeneration in cervical and lumbar nerves, excessive pressure in the coccyx region and the pelvic girdle are some consequences that you may have to deal with due to prolonged exposure to screen time without maintaining ergonomic posture.
Scrolling mobile while lying on the side for long
Sometimes, you will scroll through your phone for hours while lying on the same side. As the pressure generated is relatively high, blood doesn't flow properly through your arms and the shoulder that supports your body weight while lying on one side. Prolonged activity can lead to numbness in that particular arm, tenderness in the shoulder, and even a frozen shoulder.
Conclusion
So, through the above-mentioned pointers, we have walked you through the significant consequences you can deal with if you do not maintain your posture while exposing yourself to screen time. Whether you are working or watching movies, cutting screen time to zero or minimal level is impossible in this digital era. So, the foremost thing you can do is maintain your posture and always stay physically active to reduce muscle soreness and bone stiffness. The meniscus is an important part of your leg that works as a shock absorber when you are walking or running. You can easily injure this part of your leg if you have an active lifestyle over time. However, injuries are even more common among sports players and certain professions. The most common type of injury you can have on your meniscus is a meniscus tear. What’s a meniscus tear, and how do you get it treated? Let’s find out.
What’s A Meniscus Tear?
A meniscus tear, as the name would suggest, is an injury where there is damage and tear in your meniscus. The tear can be minimal, partial, or complete. The treatment process changes according to the severity of the injury, but surgical intervention is an important treatment procedure for such injuries. But, before diving into the treatment procedures and how they are performed, let’s take a look at the causes of a meniscus injury.
What Causes A Meniscus Tear?
A meniscus injury or tear can be caused by several factors, but it’s generally divided into two scenarios. First, you can have an accident or something sudden that causes your injury, or your injury is caused by long-term habits. Let’s look at the particulars of both these scenarios.
Twisted knee caused by accident or while playing/running
Aggressive pivoting leading to rotation of the knee
Having to squat and pick up heavy items over time can also cause meniscus injuries
Here are some of the symptoms that can help you identify a meniscus injury or tear.
Swelling around your knee
Stiffness and/or loss of mobility in your knee
Pain when moving, twisting, or rotating your knee
A popping sensation in your knee when you move it
These symptoms can help you identify a meniscus injury, and if your doctor confirms, here are some of the treatment options available to you.
How To Treat A Meniscus Tear?
There are several treatment options available to you if you have a meniscus tear. Options include physical therapy, medications, rest, and surgery in difficult cases. Even in surgery, there are various options, such as arthroscopy or open surgery. Now that you know the options, you should also know doctors use tests like MRIs and X-rays to detect your injury and understand its severity. Based on the diagnosis, your treatment plan gets decided. So, let’s look closely at the different treatment options available to you for a meniscus tear or injury.
Physical Therapy
If your injury is minimal, doctors can order physical therapy alongside simple medication to help you get back up on your feet. Professional physical therapists ask you to exercise your knee the right way to heal your damage and get you back to health.
Medications
If you have a minor injury to your meniscus that can be treated without surgery, doctors will go for medications along with physical therapy for a quick recovery. The medications you are prescribed are based on the doctor’s discretion and your case specifically.
Rest
If your knee hurts when you move, you should consider not moving. That’s what the rest is. For minor injuries, you can just put an ice pack on your knee and rest for a few days, and it should get better. This is more so if you are younger, as your body will be more likely to heal itself.
Surgery
Surgery is the last resort treatment for meniscus injuries. If you have a complicated case or a serious injury, doctors suggest for you to go through surgery. There are two surgical options at your disposal for a meniscus tear, and they are micro and open surgery.
Microsurgery: Also known as arthroscopy, it is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to fix your meniscus tear. Small incisions are made on your knee to insert cameras and surgical tools inside your knee, and they are used to see the damage and fix it.
Open Surgery: A direct incision is made on your knee around 2 to 4 inches long, and that is used to look inside your knee and treat the tear in your meniscus directly.
Conclusion
So, that’s a quick overview of what you should know about meniscus tears or injuries and how they can be treated. If you want to learn more about the treatment processes or get it yourself, you can visit Medipulse hospital in Jodhpur for the best care possible. Rheumatoid vs Orthopedic surgeons: a brief explanation

Although each medical branch differs from others, there are certain areas where they overlap. Most people fail to understand this simple fact and consider the almost relatable medical lines to be the same. The two most confusing branches are orthopedic and rheumatology.
Rheumatology vs Orthopedic: definition
When the medical problem concerns bones, cartilages, tendons, and ligaments, the medical branch dealing with these issues is termed orthopedics. For example, medical professionals in this department deal with arthritis, bone fractures, joint replacement, and so on.
On the other hand, the rheumatological department is concerned with an inflammatory autoimmune disease where the body's immune cells attack the healthy cells only and result in swells. Rheumatoid diseases can occur externally and internally, leading to a wide range of symptoms that everyone needs to be aware of.
Rheumatology vs Orthopedic: health concerns
You must know the disease types further to understand the differences between these two medical areas. This will help you to decide which medical professional you must see and when. It will reduce time, and you won't have to waste too much money on the wrong treatment.
Rheumatoid disease types
Rheumatoid arthritis
Lupus
Sjogren's syndrome
Gout
Scleroderma
Infectious arthritis
Polymyalgia rheumatica
Orthopedic disease types
Osteoarthritis
Hip and knee replacement
Trauma to the bones
Scoliosis
Plantar fasciitis
Bursitis
Dislocated joints
Rheumatology vs Orthopedic: medical professionals
As you now know the basics of these two areas of medical science, it is time to learn more about medical professionals and their way of conducting diagnoses.
Rheumatologist
A rheumatologist looks after any health problems caused due to inflamed cartilages and bones. The best way to identify is through a series of blood tests like the RA factor, antibody B, etc. X-rays are also conducted to check which areas of the bones and cartilage are affected the most and whether they can be treated with medicines only. There are certain cases when meds don't work. In this case, surgical removal of the affected cartilage is preferred.
Orthopedist
Orthopedists are of two types: An orthopedic surgeon is concerned with any disease occurring in the bones. They not only deal with acquired or developed diseases like osteoarthritis or bone tumors, but they are also concerned with treating broken and fractured bones, joint replacements, and so on.
Regular orthopedic professionals look after the health conditions where the bones can be treated with medicines and exercises.
Orthopedic surgeons are the ones who need to deal with bone replacement, joint surgeries, and so on. They handle the advanced cases when medicines and exercises fail to show positive responses in the patients. They are also concerned with handling emergencies where a person may suffer from broken bones due to accidents.
Rheumatology vs orthopedic: comparison
Most diseases falling under these two medical branches are degenerative. What doctors can do is stop the further degeneration through medicines and exercise. It means no medicine or exercise routine can restore the original condition.
While rheumatology can be treated with a lifestyle change, the same cannot be said for orthopedic problems.
Most patients suffering from rheumatology need to bear the intense pain in different parts of the body, from fingers to the cartilages between rib bones. On the other hand, if we consider the patients suffering from orthopedic problems, the pain can go away if the bone is replaced or a fracture is repaired.
Conclusion
Only medical reports can reveal whether you need an orthopedic surgeon or a rheumatologist. Now that you know the differences between orthopedic and rheumatology, you won't have to bear the consequences of visiting the wrong doctor. Just study the symptoms you are facing and get the tests done at the earliest. and you can also visit Medipulse hospital for more information and treatment.
Who are orthopaedic surgeons and what do they do?
An orthopaedic surgeon (also known as an orthopaedic doctor or orthopaedic, in short) is a specialist who focuses on conditions affecting your musculoskeletal system. In simpler terms, an orthopaedic surgeon.
An orthopaedic surgeon (also known as an orthopaedic doctor or orthopaedic, in short) is a specialist who focuses on conditions affecting your musculoskeletal system. In simpler terms, an orthopaedic surgeon helps you with diseases and conditions that affect your muscles, joints, bones, ligaments and tendons, and nerves. As a part of their job, orthopaedics diagnose your condition and help rehabilitate you to gain strength, movement, and flexibility after an accident has occurred or when you’ve undergone surgery.
Some of the most common conditions orthopaedic surgeons treat are:
Back pain
Bone fracture
Arthritis
Sprains
Joint pain
Injuries to tendons and ligaments
In the following section of this blog, we will learn about all the treatments performed by orthopaedics to treat the previously mentioned conditions.
Types of treatments performed by orthopaedics
Nonsurgical Treatments/Procedures
Orthopaedics generally recommend nonsurgical treatments before commencing any surgical procedures. Some conditions can be healed by nonsurgical procedures such as exercise and lifestyle changes. This is why orthopaedics often depend on nonsurgical procedures before delving into surgical treatments.
Some of the types of nonsurgical treatments are given below.
Medication
Some minor conditions and accidents often lead to swelling and/or pain. Orthopaedics prescribe over-the-counter medicines and drugs like ibuprofen, among others, to relieve the pain or for anti-inflammatory purposes.
Casts
Some injuries require you to keep your limb immobilized in its place to cause less strain and for the area to heal faster. In such cases, orthopaedics use casts, splints, and braces to immobilize the area.
Lifestyle changes
It is safe to assume that almost all of us who had to adapt to the ‘Work From Home’ culture have had to experience some severe back pain issues during the pandemic outbreak. As straightforward as it sounds, the back pain was caused due to sitting for long hours at a stretch while working. Therefore, sometimes your orthopaedic might suggest you make some lifestyle changes. Of course, you can’t stop working because of this; however, there are other habits that you can develop, like taking small breaks at an interval while working.
Apart from this, there are numerous other circumstances in which the orthopaedic will tell you to make any habitual or dietary changes per your body’s requirement, like the example mentioned previously.
Exercise
Your orthopaedic doctor might suggest you do some specific exercises and stretches regularly to maintain flexibility and strength in certain areas.
Surgical Treatments/Procedures
In case your situation does not improve even after applying nonsurgical procedures, your orthopaedic doctor might recommend you to go for a surgical treatment. These surgical treatments are very common, and most people of older age often require these procedures.
Some of the surgical treatments that orthopedic surgeons perform are given below.
Fusion
The fusion procedure is used to connect two bones using bone graft material and a form of internal fixation. Orthopedics predominantly use it for most neck and spine surgeries, and with this procedure, the bone tissues heal to fuse into one another over time.
Joint Replacement
Knee and hip replacement surgeries are one of the most common types of joint replacement procedures. It involves, as the name says, replacing a part of the joint which is damaged.
Soft Tissue Repair Procedure
This procedure is used to heal and repair ligaments, tendons, and muscles that are severely damaged.
Osteotomy
The type of surgery involves cutting a part of a certain bone and then repositioning it is known as osteotomy. Conditions like arthritis often cause you to undergo this type of surgery.
Final Words
You should visit an orthopaedic when home care doesn’t relieve you from pain and swelling; you have suffered a serious injury to your bone or a joint or inability to perform daily chores due to cramps and muscle sores. You must see a specialist at critical times who are professionally trained. Common Spinal Surgeries & Why They Are Done
Lumbar Laminectomy
Lumbar laminectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat the narrowing of the spine, which leads to excruciating pain. A lumbar laminectomy aims to remove the lamina part, pressing up against the spine and causing the pain. The goal of lumbar laminectomy is to remove the pressure that is being put on the spinal cord. Sometimes, the spinal canal is also widened in the course of the surgery. This problem is often found in the elderly because of age-related problems, and this surgery is used to permanently treat this problem.
Herniated Disc Surgery
A herniated disc refers to a problem in the discs between your vertebrae. Depending on the damage to the disc, it is either fully taken out of your body or part of the disc is taken out. If the entire disc is taken out, it can have certain problems as you will most probably not be able to move that part of your back again as two vertebrae will fuse together. So, given the seriousness of the consequences, it is crucial for you to discuss the risks and probabilities with your doctor before your surgery.
Spinal Fusion Surgery
Sometimes, due to the damage to the disc between the two spinal bones, they have to be fused through screws and rods. This is done to avoid the pain caused due to the movement of the two vertebrae against each other. A spinal fusion surgery effectively fuses the two vertebrae curing the pain but also taking away your ability to make any movement in that part of your back again.

Joint replacement is a surgical procedure where a damaged joint is surgically removed and replaced with artificial implants. A joint replacement procedure is most commonly performed in cases of advanced arthritis or due to severe accidental damage to the joints. Today, with the new advances in medical technology, joint replacement surgeries can now be performed as minimally invasive surgeries that considerably cut down the recovery time and hospitalization time of the patient. There are mainly two types of joint replacement surgeries that are performed in different parts of your body.
Types Of Joint Replacement Surgeries
Total Joint Replacement Surgery
Total joint replacement surgery is one where the entire joint is damaged and needs to be removed surgically. These surgeries take out the damaged joint, and it is replaced by artificially manufactured prosthetic implants. Doctors only suggest total joint replacement surgery in serious cases of joint damage from advanced arthritis or damage caused by accidents.
Partial Joint Replacement Surgery
Partial joint replacement surgery is a more complicated procedure than total joint replacement. As with partial joint replacement, only the damaged cartilages of the joint are removed and replaced with prosthetic implants. These implants need to be installed skillfully to ensure the improvement in the mobility of the patient. Doctors suggest this procedure in cases of serious arthritis as well as accidental joint damages.
Common Joint Replacement Surgeries
Knee Replacement Surgery
The knee has three compartments. Knee replacement surgery aims to remove any of three or all of the three compartments of the knee based on the damage occurred to the patient. If the patient has damaged only one or two knee compartments, they are suggested to go through a partial knee replacement surgery where the damaged parts are removed from the body and implants are inserted to improve mobility and relieve the pain of the patients. If the patient has damaged all three of their knee compartments, doctors suggest a total knee replacement surgery that involves taking out the damaged knee and replacing it with prosthetic implants.
Hip Replacement Surgery
Hip replacement surgery aims can be performed as both total and partial joint replacements. This procedure aims to remove the damaged part of the hip, be it partial or complete and replace it with implants. Today, with the advances in medical technology, patients can opt for anterior hip replacement surgery, a minimally invasive surgery requiring a small incision to be made in the body. It expedites the recovery time of the patient. Traditional and anterior hip replacement procedures are both serious procedures that are suggested only in cases where the damage to the joint is very severe.

The arch of the foot refers to the area between the ball and the heel of the foot. People that have an active lifestyle that involves a lot of movements commonly suffer from pain in this region. This is the reason athletes suffer from pain in these regions very commonly. The arch in the foot is visible from the outside. It is made of three arches internally that are all separately built out of bones, tendons, and ligaments. These arches together form the shape of a triangle that helps create the arch visible from the outside.
Pain in that region of the foot can be caused mainly by two reasons.
Structural problems or internal abnormalities
External Injuries causing internal damage
These are the basic reasons why people might have pain in the arch of their feet. The pain can also come from other factors such as ageing, physical stress, weight gains, overuse, neurological conditions. All these factors lead to different types of injuries that have their own treatment process and preventive measures. Read along to learn about the different types of injuries the arch in your foot can be affected by and how you can treat and prevent them.
Different Types Of Causes For Pain In The Foot Arch
1. Overpronation
Description: Overpronation is a condition that affects people that walk a certain way. People who walk with the back of their heel touching the ground and rolling all the way for taking a step generally suffer from problems such as overpronation. This is caused due to the extra pressure that the arch of the foot faces causing it to become straighter.
Effects: This condition can cause problems such as hammertoe and calluses in the long term. It can also lead to problems such as pain and damage in ligaments, muscles, and tendons. It can also lead to pain in different parts of your body, such as hips, knees, and back.
Stretches: If you are suffering from overpronation, you can do some light stretching to help you with your condition. You need to stand with your legs apart, and while keeping your toes on the ground, you have to push your weight towards the outer parts of your feet, raising the arch of your feet. After holding yourself in that position for a few seconds, come down slowly, and you can repeat these exercises a few times.
Treatment: Overpronation is a problem that can lead to problems in the affected person’s ability to support themselves. This is why doctors often prescribe external walking support for the patient so they can get extra support while walking. They are also prescribed to use stability shoes to help them walk properly. Medically prescribed arch supports are also provided to help patients get the extra support they need for walking.
2. Cavus Foot
Description: Cavus foot is a condition that causes a structural abnormality in a person’s foot. This abnormality causes a high arch in the foot that can lead to pain in your foot while doing basic activities such as walking or standing. This condition is caused by various factors such as genetics, stroke, Charcot Marie tooth disease, and cerebral palsy.
Effects: Cavus foot causes pain in the foot of the patient from walking or standing. It also causes a loss of stability for the patient, which makes standing or walking very hard. The loss of stability also makes it very easy to hurt after parts of your leg while standing or walking, such as your ankles. Cavus foot can also lead to other issues such as claw toes.
Stretches: There are a number of stretches that you can do to help yourself if you are suffering from cavus foot. Stretches such as towel stretch and bent knee wall stretch can help you ease your condition. Towel stretches require you to put a towel around the ball of your feet; then, you have to flex your foot while gently tugging the towel and stretching your toes.
Treatment: Cavus foot is a condition that does not have any medicinal treatment process. Patients are required to get surgical treatment for their condition. The surgeries differ, however, based on the severity and the condition of the person. The types of surgeries include bone shifting, tendon transfer, and soft tissue release.
Having stiff pain in the arch of your foot is not a very common condition. This is why if you are regularly suffering from it, you should not take it lightly, and you must get medical help to check out what problems you are facing. There are many different conditions that can be the cause of your pain in the arch of your foot. Only with a proper medical diagnosis you can understand the cause of your pain and get the appropriate treatment necessary to help you heal from the problem.
